Teacher Notes

This project is designed for students in the 6th-8th grades in science or social studies.  Its purpose is to teach them how to research a subject, and how to come up with their own opinions about something that they have researched.  They will learn how to make a persuasive argument and how to support their opinions with facts.  To do this project, every student should work independently, so that each one can come up with their own opinion, paper, and presentation.  They should use the Internet to research this project.  The students should have about a week to research this project, and then another 2 weeks to prepare their paper and presentation.  The students should have a day or two to present their arguments.  For the presentation, instead of having each child stand up in front of the class and present on the same subject, the students can be paired off, and would have to present just in front of his/her partner, who then can write down comments on the presentation.  The teacher can walk around while this is happening and observe how each child is doing.

The teacher should look up the websites that were given to the students, so that he/she will know more about the subject and grade objectively on each paper and presentation.  After the presentations, the teacher should have a discussion with the class and ask them questions.  Some examples are:
1)  Has researching this subject made you change the kind of water you drink?
2)  Did anyone's presentation change the way you looked at the kind of water you prefer?
3)  Do you feel like your opinion matters more now, now that you can back it up with research?
